A basement is often an ideal environment for mold proliferation. This is due to the fact that air circulation is typically poor and this leads to accumulation of moisture. And moisture offers to molds perfect conditions to develop massively.
Therefore, it makes sense to pay special attention to basements and proceed in time to mold removal, in order to prevent escalation.
A classic do it yourself approach is a two step process:
- Firstly, a less powerful solution is used to remove most of the visible mold. This can be a mixture of soap and water for example.
- Then, once the first step is completed, a more powerful disinfectant is used to finish off the removal. You can use the classical bleach for this part. Just dilute it in a once cup of bleach to one gallon of water ration.
The best approach is to address also the root cause of the mold. Try to determine what is causing the mold and then find solutions to eliminate the cause. For example, try to improve ventilation, install a dehumidifier, fix broken pipes or other flood causes and so on. Just monitor the basement regularly after the operation is completed.
In a lot of instances the mold will return. Your best bet is to address the root causes as effectively as possible. You can also hire a professional company for a proper mold remediation project. This is not going to be cheap, but the results are likely to be far superior to the ones you can get by yourself.
